The Certificate in Accounting Controls and Reconciliation is designed for finance professionals who support audit preparation, manage internal controls, and ensure the accuracy of financial records. This course focuses on essential areas such as ledger management, error detection, bad and doubtful debt handling, depreciation recording, and bank reconciliation procedures. Participants will gain the practical skills needed to maintain control over financial systems, detect anomalies, and ensure that books align with bank statements and organizational policies. It is ideal for finance team members, reconciliation officers, and internal audit support staff.

  • To strengthen understanding of ledger management and the preparation of accurate trial balances.
  • To develop the ability to identify and account for bad and doubtful debts in compliance with prudent financial reporting.
  • To explain the importance of depreciation and ensure correct allocation of asset costs over useful life.
  • To train learners in performing accurate bank reconciliations and resolving discrepancies efficiently.
  • To reinforce the importance of internal controls and audit readiness in the reconciliation process.
  • To improve error detection and correction processes that impact final account accuracy and audit reliability.

This module introduces learners to the ledger system, the cornerstone of double-entry accounting, and the preparation of the trial balance. It explains how transactions recorded in the books of prime entry are posted to ledger accounts—classified as Receivables, Payables, and General Ledger—using formats like T accounts and running balance accounts. The module also explains the structure and utility of the chart of accounts, the procedure for balancing ledger accounts, and the process for preparing a trial balance. It highlights the purpose, importance, and limitations of the trial balance as a tool for detecting errors and preparing final accounts.

This module explains the accounting treatment of bad debts (irrecoverable debts) and doubtful debts (potentially uncollectible amounts), emphasizing their impact on financial accuracy and compliance with the prudence concept in accounting. Learners are introduced to the classification of receivables, journal entries for bad debt write-offs, recovery, and the creation of allowance accounts. The module also covers the use of aging analysis to assess the credit risk associated with customer accounts and determine the appropriate provision for doubtful debts

This module introduces learners to the concept of depreciation, a systematic method for allocating the cost of a tangible non-current asset over its useful life. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing depreciation as an expense that reflects the consumption of an asset’s economic benefits. Learners are introduced to different types of non-current assets, the measurement of asset cost, and key depreciation methods including straight-line, reducing balance, sum-of-digits, and units of production. The module also covers accounting entries, presentation in financial statements, and the treatment of residual value, useful life, and accumulated depreciation.

This module provides a detailed understanding of the bank reconciliation process, an essential internal control activity for ensuring the accuracy of cash and bank balances. Learners are introduced to various payment and receipt methods, differences between cash book and bank statements, and the causes of discrepancies such as timing differences and recording errors. The module also explains the process of identifying and correcting these differences through adjustments in the cash book and the preparation of the Bank Reconciliation Statement (BRS). Real-world practices like handling unpresented cheques, uncredited deposits, and dishonoured payments are also addressed.
